Chain Side Table
by BETHAN LAURA WOOD
One off creation produced as prototypes for “Spirit of Resurgence” exhibition, Venice Glass Week 2020. Prototypes limited in number, product rollout under review.
Chain makes the first conversations between Venetian glass producers Wonderglass and Bethan Laura Wood in cast glass.Using existing rectangular ‘donut brick’ moulds, Bethan Interloops, interlocks and stacks these forms together to create furniture that connects with the architectural possibilities of glass.
In these pieces yellow and clear glass are combined together, using the subtleties of tones that build up through the layering of coloured glass to give a vibrating but delicate palate.
The interlocking or CHAIN construction is made using multiple donut bricks, cut into two parts and threaded through the centre of another to build up the form. The curved and polished end details of the cut brick are a nod towards the painted ends found in many Japanese wooden temples. In this period of time when most travel is on pause Bethan took this opportunity to reflect on her adventures over the last two years in Asia, and use the interlocking glass components to reference the amazing joinery she photographed.
